EGLC Women’s V Hawks Alchemy

Category: NewsTeams

It was an extremely chilly Sunday morning when EG Women’s team met Hawks Alchemy at East Grinstead Sports Club. With a great recruitment drive throughout the week from Captain, Charlotte Price EG Women’s had 12 players which helped the morale of the team from the start of the match.

The match started promptly with Gemma Rose in centre fighting for the first centre draw. Possession rolled in favour of Hawks Alchemy who had a fast break and beat EG defenders to score the first goal of the match. This pushed the team to fight for the ball from the draw and led to East Grinstead having the ball in attack. Sophie Wright kept possession behind goal and rolled the crease which resulted in the first EG goal of the match.

Throughout the first quarter, both teams were evenly matched. A debut for Frankie Hackett this season in goal helped the defence to keep pressure on each Hawks player. East Grinstead defence was amazing, with some great slides from Bethan Maidment and Alice Marno calling the free player to help the midfielders slot into defence. By the end of the first quarter, it was a close score line and Hawks were ahead by a couple of goals.

Mollie Miller worked well with Gemma Rose in centre gaining possession from the centre draws. Hawks Alchemy kept the pressure in midfield which meant East Grinstead had to support the ball carrier. Katherine Gist provided support with some great trailing options and this led to EG keeping the ball in attack. Charlotte Price was providing options for passes into attack however Hawks were playing tight defence. Jen Austin made a clear and concise cut into the fan, received a great pass from behind goal and another goal was scored. At half time, East Grinstead were in the lead 6-4 but knew that they had to keep the pressure up.

The second half was just as close as the first, with both teams wanting a win. However, East Grinstead’s defence were not giving Hawks any opportunity to get an easy goal. With Jen Austin and Frankie Hackett defending the Hawk’s attacker right on the crease meant that Hawks were finding it difficult to get a goal.

Alice Marno tackled one of the Hawk’s players in midfield, gained possession of the ball and drove towards goal. With a fast break and the Hawk’s defence not ready to take on Alice, this resulted in a one on one with goalie and another goal for EG. Hawks weren’t going to give up that easily and made a couple of fast breaks and scored two more goals which meant both teams were neck and neck at 8-8.

With it being so close, the last quarter turned into being quite viscous with each player fighting for the ball at every opportunity. This resulted in some wild tackles from both sides and Sophie Wright receiving a head check in the last 10 seconds. After a major foul was called, there was 4 seconds to go, suspense was building but unfortunately no goal was scored.

Well played to both teams and EG are looking forward to the away game!

Final result: 8-8

Player of the match: Bethan Maidment for some amazing defence and running the ball down into midfield.
